Denton = vegan awesomeness

I just want to take a moment and appreciate how many ALL VEGAN places we have to choose from in Denton. When I first started this blog/website over 11 years ago, I was happy to find a dish or two at any local restaurant and wanted to help others find them. Now we have so many options! So let's highlight these businesses that we can walk up to and order literally anything on the menu.
  • Mean Greens at UNT, the nation's first all vegan dining hall. All you can eat vegan food for one price is pretty awesome. Sure, they're not open as much as we'd like, but they are still going strong after 10 years and we feel so spoiled with their soft serve and variety of menus. It's even better now that there's an affordable paid parking option nearby.
  • Spiral Diner. Next on the scene was the opening of Denton's very own location. We used to drive to Ft. Worth or Oak Cliff just for those cupcakes and nachos. Now we can just pop over and get that amazing food whenever! And believe me, we do, because it's so easy to order carryout with that app.
  • Pepitas. It was exciting when Milpa got a few vegan dishes, and then we saw Pepitas grow into its very own location. What a great variety of vegan Tex-Mex! They have all of the classic dishes WITH the cheese, Taco Tuesdays, Sunday brunch, and great desserts. Online ordering also makes pickup super convenient.
  • PLOW Burger. This food truck concept from Austin branched out to Denton and we are hooked. Denton even gets its own burger called the Mean Green. I haven't tried any of the other burgers on the menu because this one is so good. Two for Tuesdays is a great deal because it gets you two burgers, two fries, and two PLOW sauces for $20.
  • The So Good Vegan. What started as a pop-up at Mashup Market has grown into a food truck that is usually parked at Rubber Gloves. The Kicken Fried Chicken sandwich is so freaking good, and so are the burgers, smoked brisket, and the mac n' cheese. Go catch a show and a good meal with them.
  • Soulgood Vegan Restaurant at TWU. Denton's newest spot is great for breakfast and lunch. It's lovely for dine-in or easy to take it to go. The fluffy waffles are shaped like Texas and the staff is friendly. The breakfast is served all day, too!
Can you believe it? SIX all vegan establishments in Denton! I'm so proud of how vegan-friendly this town is. Please keep showing your love for these local businesses and keep them going and growing.

Nature's plate at Mashup Market

Recently I tried a variety of foods from Nature's Plate. This is a company based in Dallas (by people from Denton) that makes healthy vegan meals, which you can preorder and pick up at Mashup Market on Wednesday afternoons.
I was happy to find that they were tasty, healthy, and convenient. The veggies in the Sweet and Sour Tofu had crunch to them, the Chana Masala had a great spice, and the mashed potatoes were so flavorful!
The menu options change each week, and things can be ordered a la carte or with a subscription service. The subscription is a purchase of at least 5 meals a week, which can be skipped as needed, at a lower price. There are also discounts for quantity orders on top of that. I went for the subscription because I have hungry vegan teens and I'd rather they grab something like this than a package of ramen!
Pictured above, clockwise from top left: Sweet and Sour Tofu, gf Brownie, Lemon Tahini Bowl, Chana Masala (I added a dollop of plain yogurt), Chana Masala in the package, and the BBQ Plate.
If you'd like to try them out, they are offering $15 off your first order with the coupon code DENTONVEGAN. Choose Wednesday delivery and Mashup Market as the location. Enjoy!

Check out The Cookie Crave for a great selection of vegan cookies that are really good! The ginger snap has bite, and the oatmeal chocolate chip has just the right texture.
They also have a big selection of tea blends to enjoy with your cookies. Patio seating is available, too! Next time you're near the square, stop by and grab a few.

Mean Greens theme days

When you visit Mean Greens, notice the announcements near the register for upcoming theme days. It's for all of the dining halls, so look in the upper right hand corner to see which ones apply to Mean Greens. This week they'll be celebraing two good ones: Thursday will be National Pasta Day, and Friday will be National Chocolate Cupcake Day!
Now that we've found the nearby paid parking that's about $3 for an hour, it will be more convenient to go back more often. See you there!

Gyro 360 recently opened on Hickory Street just off the square. Pictured here is their beautiful falafel sandwich with lettuce, tomato, red onion, and tahini sauce. You can also get the falafel bowl if you prefer.  We're glad to know that they don't fry animal products in their oil, so their vegan food is truly vegan.  Enjoy!!
